NXT Hits and Misses 4.15.20 w/ The Chairman

The world of NXT continues to charge ahead despite the circumstances. However it’s worth noting before we get started that the NXT roster has undergone some minor changes. WWE has been forced to make some tough decisions and familiar faces on the black and gold brand Lio Rush and Deonna Purrazzo were released. I personally hope Rush, Purrazzo, and all the talent impacted by the recent decisions bounce back on their feet in the future. However that is a conversation for another time, perhaps our next Hot Tag Wrestling podcast? If you’re not subscribing, make sure you are and thank you to those listeners who follow along with us. With that being said, let’s dig into this latest episode.

HIT: Balor Continues the Imperium Gauntlet

Similar to what Velveteen Dream has been doing with the members of the Undisputed Era to get to their leader, Finn Balor continues taking out WALTER’s henchmen. This time it was Fabian Aichner. Marcel Barthel of course was at ringside so Balor had to watch over his shoulder. However the Prince overcame the odds and put away Aichner with the Coup De Grace and 1916. This was a solid showing for Aichner who doesn’t get featured very often in singles matches these days on Wednesday nights. Balor of course will bide his time until he reaches WALTER.

HIT: Charlotte Flair Ready for the NXT Generation

Charlotte has defeated her rivals Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks, and Bayley time and time again along with several other mainstays on Raw and Smackdown. She’s even taken down veterans like Natalya and Trish Stratus. Now she has the NXT Women’s Championship and has her eyes on the NXT generation such as number one contender Io Shirai, Mia Yim, Rhea Ripley, and anyone else who wants to step up. I wasn’t sure what to think at first of Charlotte defeating Rhea at Wrestlemania, but now I’m accepting of it. Charlotte gets a whole new field of women to compete against and the creative forces of Raw and Smackdown over the years have made Charlotte unbearable between the large amount of title reigns in a few year span on top of never ending feuds with Sasha and Becky when they were going on. Nobody knows how long this Charlotte tour in NXT is going to last, but I’m going to enjoy the ride.

HOLD: Xia Li Gets Payback

Few months ago Xia Li busted Aliyah’s nose. Aliyah returns and takes out Xia Li backstage before a qualifying match for a title shot that Aliyah ended up losing to Io Shirai. Xia Li got her payback against Aliyah quickly. Aliyah’s been in NXT forever and basically is an enhancement talent that’ll probably never reach Raw or Smackdown. Xia Li on the other hand, well who knows. We’ll wait and see what NXT decides to do with her next.

HIT: Tozawa Gets a Key Victory as Swerve’s Slide Continues

As most know, Jordan Devlin is out as NXT Crusierweight champion for the time being so an interim champion is being crowned. I give credit for them setting up the tournament in groups similar to the G1 Climax of New Japan (obviously G1 Climax is a larger tournament with more on the line) opposed to a traditional single elimination tournament. Isaiah “Swerve” Scott took the pinfall at Worlds Collide in the fatal four way title match to Devlin so he has a chip on his shoulder. Akira Tozawa has been on Raw doing jobs lately and been three years removed as champion. Clearly both men need to start off on the right foot here. Tozawa hopefully remains in the 205 Live/NXT scene opposed to doing jobs on Raw and more so Main Event. He had a great showing here with Swerve and picked up the win. Definitely a surprise here as I thought Swerve would’ve won this one. Guess we’ll see where the chips fall going forward.

MISS: Tegan Nox Continues Her Feud With Dakota Kai and Raquel Gonzalez

So this is still happening. I’m not sure where they’re going with this because I feel some of these matches in this rivalry have been quick which isn’t good. Tegan took on Dakota’s new best friend Raquel Gonzalez who’s making her in ring debut and of course with Dakota at ringside made this basically a two on one affair. Shotzi Blackheart however came out and evened the playing field taking Dakota out. Raquel went after Shotzi, but Tegan rolls up Raquel for a quick win. Next week Tegan and Shotzi take on Dakota and Raquel. Hopefully the tag team match gets some time actually to tell a story.

HOLD: Dexter Lumis Squash

The serial killer name with the Stranger Things theme newcomer makes quick work of Tahuti Miles and finishes him off with the Anaconda Vice. Not much to really say here except wait and see where this Dexter Lumis character goes.

HIT: Velveteen Dream Confronted by Prince

No I’m not talking about one of his character influences, sadly he’s passed on. I’m talking Prince Finn Balor. Originally it was supposed to be Adam Cole, but he decided he wasn’t showing up. Cole of course the recently crowned longest reigning NXT Champion has been crowned the greatest by many, including the Dream. That however didn’t sit well with Balor which led to their confrontation. Balor told Dream if he kept running his mouth that the two of them would have a date and Dream of course asked the Prince when to pick him up. Next week two of the most polarizing figures of NXT are colliding. This is a must see match considering both of these men are primed for big championship matches in the future. Dream of course isn’t wasting any time attacking Balor on Twitter, definitely worth seeing.

HOLD: Matt Riddle Gets a New Partner With Stallion Pete Out

Obviously with the circumstances, Pete Dunne is unable to assist Matt Riddle in defending the NXT Tag Team Championship. Dunne found Riddle a partner to take on the Undisputed Era’s Roderick Strong and Bobby Fish, Timothy Thatcher. Now I have no idea who Thatcher is and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one. What made this match even more weird was Dexter Lumis was hanging out watching this match? Riddle managed to keep his tag team title belt when Thatcher made Strong tap out to an armbar submission.

HIT: Ciampa Picked Off By Karrion Kross

To close the show, Tommaso Ciampa vowed he was done with Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae. However newcomer Karrion Kross found Ciampa and attacked him. This is definitely a story to get behind. There has been lots of hype on Cross since it was announced he signed with NXT and what better way than to bring him in against Ciampa. I’m ready for this.

That concludes this episode of NXT. Thanks for reading and we’ll do it again next week.
