NXT Hits and Misses 4.8.20 w/ The Chairman

This week’s episode of NXT featured two matches that would’ve taken place at NXT Takeover Tampa had things been normal. Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa faced off in a empty arena match. How is that different than most other matches in WWE these days I don’t know? Also on tap was the women’s number one contender ladder match. Let’s dive in!

HIT: Joshi Judas Wins Money in the Bank

Even though it wasn’t a Money in the Bank match, it might as well be. Multi wrestlers, check. Ladder match, check. Briefcase hanging from the ceiling, check. The only difference between this and a Money in the Bank match is this briefcase can’t be cashed in at anytime. Instead the winner is the number one contender for the NXT Women’s Championship held by Charlotte Flair. Flair of course defeated Rhea Ripley at Wrestlemania 36 making her a two time champion. So of course by WWE logic, this thins the field of winners because you know a heel Charlotte isn’t wrestling another heel so cross off Chelsea Green and Dakota Kai. Io Shirai is a fan favorite despite her heelish actions recently and of course other faces were Candice LeRae, Tegan Nox, and Mia Yim. Nox and Kai have their feud going and Yim isn’t a strong enough contender to takedown Charlotte so basically this match was down to Io and Candice. Dakota didn’t come alone as Raquel Gonzalez was around making things difficult for the others as was Chelsea Green’s manager Robert Stone. In the end Stone was helping Green climb the ladder giving me scary Carmella James Ellsworth vibes. They were pushed off the ladder though by Io and Candice and the two rivals exchanged blows on the top of the ladder. Shirai however managed to pie face Candice off the ladder onto another ladder below to win the match. Decent match showcasing a deep women’s division in NXT. It’s also worth noting here Bianca Belair more than likely has moved to the Raw roster aligning with her real life Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins, the Street Profits.

MISS: Prince and WALTER Recap

It’s clear there wasn’t alot of content prepared for the two hour NXT episode this week. We seen recaps of the Finn Balor and WALTER story and part of a match where Balor had defeated Alexander Wolfe on a episode of NXT UK. Obviously with the way things are in the world, this match has been delayed. When will this clash take place remains to be seen, but it definitely is one of the most anticipated matches for NXT and NXT UK fans.

MISS: Indus Sher Get in the Ring

So Malcolm Bivens new tag team wrestled in a match against some Ever Rise team and the match went longer than it should’ve. This guys should’ve squashed Ever Rise, but of course there wasn’t much content this week and I’m guessing they didn’t want to bring in Ever Rise for a squash considering the circumstances of the world. Either or, it was boring and I don’t understand Indus Sher at all. This is AOP all over again. Two big dudes who don’t talk accompanied with a manager. How original.

MISS: Gargano and Ciampa’s Final Beat

Sorry everyone, this was not good. I don’t know if it was the terrible camera cuts, bad lighting, or the constant interruption of commercials? I just couldn’t get into this. Throw in the terrible finish where Candice randomly shows up in wrestling attire? She tells Ciampa how she hates her husband and kicks Gargano in the groin dropping him. Ciampa of course is baffled and surprised when Candice comes back and low blows him and Gargano reveals he’s wearing a cup. Yep, this happened folks…….

Well there you have it folks. Another NXT in the books. Eventually we’ll get to that Adam Cole and Velveteen Dream clash. However it’s worth noting because Jordan Devlin is stuck overseas, the Cruiserweight title has been vacated? Don’t understand that one, but okay. Also talks Matt Riddle’s tag team championship is in jeopardy because Pete Dunne is also stuck overseas. This point wrestling just needs to hit the pause button, but that’s an opinion for another day. I’m just covering NXT week by week here and I’ll get back to that next week.
