NXT Hits and Misses 2.12.20 w/ The Chairman

The final episode of NXT before Takeover Portland went down and here’s all the hits and misses that took place.

HIT: Roderick Strong Out for Revenge

Roderick Strong started off NXT addressing what the Velveteen Dream did last week by returning to NXT, attacking the Undisputed Era, and took things further by channeling Rick Rude by wearing Strong’s wife and child on his tights. One of the many superstars Undisputed Era ambushed last week Bronson Reed confronted Strong and this led right into a match. Dream tried playing mind games during the match with purple lights, but Strong took care of Reed. Later it was announced Strong and Dream would face off next week.

HIT: Dakota Gets One on Tegan’s Friend Before Takeover

Dakota Kai took on Candice LeRae in a match before Kai faced her former friend Tegan Nox in a street fight this Sunday at Takeover Portland. The match did a good job showcasing both women who could play a huge role in the strong division in 2020. Kai managed to steal the win with a roll up which was the right call giving her momentum before the big match Sunday. Of course the two women still were brawling at ringside before Tegan Nox came out and attacked Dakota.

HIT: Johnny Wrestling Racks Another Victory

Johnny Gargano took on Cameron Grimes in what easily could’ve been a squash match ended up being a decent contest. Grimes was on fire a few months ago, but has cooled off since. Gargano of course has a huge match against Finn Balor this Sunday at Takeover Portland. Gargano of course was victorious in this match and now aims for his biggest challenge in quite some time.

HIT: Cruiserweight Rivals Clash

Angel Garza and Lio Rush has had some epic clashes in recent months feuding for the NXT Cruiserweight Championship. Garza managed to defeat Rush for that very belt awhile back, but Garza unfortunately fell victim in a fatal four way match at Worlds Collide where he wasn’t pinned but still lost the title. Jordan Devlin is the one holding the title now and Garza and Rush faced off for the right to challenge Devlin next. Garza has been on Raw in recent weeks as well so it’s up in the air if he’s going to fully transition there or pull double duty. Rush managed to get the win over Garza with a rollup pin and was confronted by Devlin on the stage. Devlin faces Rush next week with the title on the line.

MISS: Bianca Squash

The match served it’s purpose where Bianca Belair got a quick win on Santana Garrett. However they would’ve been better off just having Belair go to the ring and call out Rhea Ripley for overlooking her for Charlotte Flair because that’s the real story here. Ripley of course confronted Belair and it was Belair looking strong in the end of this segment hitting Ripley with the KOD. As usual, the one looking strong on the go home show loses at the big event so if I was a betting man, put everything on Ripley to retain.

HIT: Adam Cole Gets Back on Victory Road

Adam Cole hasn’t racked up many wins lately after losing a six man tag match via disqualification and of course losing to Imperium at Worlds Collide. However he put that all behind him when he faced another superstar looking to gain some victories, Kushida. This was a match I was excited for when it was announced. Kushida of course wasn’t going to win with Cole having a huge match coming up at Takeover Portland against Tommaso Ciampa. Cole took down Kushida with the Last Shot and then was confronted by Ciampa to close the show.
