NXT Hits and Misses 2.5.20 w/ The Chairman

We’re another week closer to NXT Takeover Portland and lots of things went down in Full Sail tonight. With that being said, let’s get right to the hits and misses.

HIT: How Many Fish?

The show started with Matt Riddle and Pete Dunne complete with a golf cart carrying around their Dusty Classic trophy. Riddle and Dunne had their targets set on Undisputed Era for the NXT Tag Team Championship at NXT Takeover Portland. Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly came out and called them a joke and an insult to the tag team division. Bobby Fish made the mistake using the word fish in his promo leading Riddle to sing a song mocking Bobby Fish’s last name. I thought it was hilarious and Riddle being the opposite of Dunne makes them click for now. Whether or not this is a long term thing or not remains to be seen, but strike while the iron is hot.

HIT: Big Match in the Cruiserweight Division

Angel Garza took on Isaiah “Swerve” Scott in a battle between cruiserweights. Both men faced off in the four way match at Worlds Collide, but neither left the champion, that was Jordan Devlin. This match of course will give the winner a quicker path to a future championship match. Garza of course has been busy when he was on Raw this past Monday confronting his cousin Humberto Carrillo and taking out Rey Mysterio Jr. Garza and Scott had a great clash, but it was Garza with the Wing Clipper to secure a big win.

MISS: Feast Your Eyes Not on This Match

Dominic Dijakovic continues his march towards NXT Takeover Portland where he will do battle with his rival Keith Lee for the NXT North American Championship. His opponent here was Killian Dain. Dain has really struggled to connect since resurfacing in NXT. Dain anymore is an enhancement talent and served his purpose here when Dijakovic was victorious with Feast Your Eyes.

HIT: Gargano and Balor Road to Takeover

An interview between Finn Balor and Johnny Gargano took place and was very well done. The two men went back and forth on each other about their upcoming match. Balor’s serious demeanor has done wonders for him since returning to NXT regardless of what Gargano said aboutt Balor losing seventeen times to Bobby Lashley. This match will be one of the highlights of the event and Balor vows this is Johnny’s last match ever.

HOLD: Mercedes Runs Over Kacy

Mercedes Martinez fills a much needed veteran presence in NXT, however it’ll remain to be seen what her endgame is in a stacked women’s division. Racking up a win over Kacy Catanzaro is one thing, but what happens when she faces the upper echelon of talent in NXT?

HIT: Irish Ace Deals Against Prince Pretty

The new NXT Crusierweight Champion Jordan Devlin arrived at Full Sail in a match against Tyler Breeze. Breeze did his typical pose on the apron and Devlin took him out with a sliding dropkick cheap shot. Devlin was showing some heel tactics in this match as the crowd was in full support of Breeze. This was a good match as it got plenty of time and one of the best performances from Breeze in quite some time. However Breeze was unable to stop the Irish Ace as he was finished off with the Devlin Slide. The new champ looked good here, but Angel Garza isn’t far behind.

HIT: Charlotte Flair Invades NXT

After Rhea Ripley confronted Charlotte at Raw this past Monday, Charlotte decided to return the favor by invading NXT. Bianca Belair has been regulated to the third wheel in this feud all the sudden even though she has a NXT Championship match against Ripley at Takeover. Charlotte of course hasn’t picked her Wrestlemania opponent yet, but all signs point to Ripley. Bianca was killing it in the promo department here by dropping the “You Don’t Even Go Here” line again on Charlotte this time. Rhea and Bianca then dropped the WE ARE NXT phrase and took out their unwanted guest before having words with each other.

HIT: Dream On

After the Undisputed Era went all over the arena taking out everyone looking for Tommaso Ciampa, they finally found him earlier in the show. This led to a brawl where Dunne and Riddle got involved. William Regal then booked a six man tag in the main event. Ciampa and the BROsierweights against Adam Cole, Fish, and O’Reilly and of course Roderick Strong was lurking around ringside. The match did what it needed to do, but Strong ran in the ring and got the Undisputed Era disqualified. This led to a four on one attack on Ciampa after Dunne and Riddle were nullified. Cole spray painted an X on the back of Ciampa’s next vowing to finish him off. All the sudden the arena went dark, three circles with 2,5,20 appeared and the Velveteen Dream returned and fought off the Undisputed Era and went after the man who injured him Roderick Strong. Dream revealed a pair of pants showing Dream, Strong’s wife Marina Shafir, and child with Call Me Marina on his rear. Definite Rick Rude influence here.

Decent show, the road to NXT Takeover Portland is great. I’m looking forward to seeing what we get next week for the go home show. Thanks for reading and see you next week.
