NXT Hits and Misses 1.29.20 w/ The Chairman

Worlds Collide has come and gone, but NXT Takeover Portland is only a few weeks away. Tonight on NXT we find out who will challenge Adam Cole for the NXT Championship. We also find out which tag team wins the Dusty Classic between the Grizzled Young Veterans and the team of Pete Dunne and Matt Riddle. All this and more on NXT so let’s see what hit and what missed.

HIT: Prince Continues Dominating the Win Column

Finn Balor didn’t waste any time getting another win under his belt this week. After a backstage altercation with Moustache Mountain at Worlds Collide, Balor ambushed Trent Seven in the parking lot leading to their match. Seven didn’t stand much of a chance in this match as Balor attacked him early and it was mostly Balor from the start. A Coup De Grace and 1916 finished off Seven as Balor continues his domination on the road to NXT Takeover Portland where he meets Johnny Gargano. With Balor also taking care of Seven, I’m hoping at some point we get a match between Balor and Tyler Bate.

HOLD: Shotzi’s Momentum Continues

After being attacked backstage last week by Deonna Purrazzo, Shotzi Blackheart managed to get her revenge this week inside the ring. Two of the newest women in NXT faced off in this contest and Shotzi managed to win this one with the diving senton. Shotzi has been busy the past few weeks going from a brief feud with Shayna Baszler to entering the Royal Rumble this past Sunday. It’ll be interesting to see how far Shotzi goes. Does she go all the way to the top or does she eventually bottom out when she steps between the ropes against the best in NXT like she did against Baszler? As for Deonna Purrazzo, it remains to be seen what her future is in NXT? This loss definitely didn’t help her so we’ll have to see if she can bounce back from this.

HIT: Keith Lee’s Contender List Grows

The new NXT North American Champion Keith Lee spoke on his recent victory and how he was going to take all the gold from the Undisputed Era. Just when he was about to touch on the next title he planned on taking from the Undisputed Era, he was interrupted by Damian Priest. Priest wanted to take Lee’s title, but Dominic Dijakovic disagreed and called Priest a bootleg Marilyn Manson and said he was going to be the one to take Lee’s title. Lee quietly left the ring and let the two big men clash. Priest held his own, but Dijakovic hit the Feast Your Eyes to secure the win. Personally I would’ve preferred Priest to win here being I like him more as a fan. However Lee’s not losing the title in his first defense so it only makes sense in this aspect to have him take on one of his biggest rivals in Dijakovic.

HIT: Ciampa Signs His Name in Blood to Get Goldie Back

Roderick Strong, Kyle O’Reilly, and Bobby Fish are all seen backstage laid out and it was revealed that it was done by none other than Tommaso Ciampa. Ciampa made his way to the ring and this led to Adam Cole confronting Ciampa for what he did. William Regal was out there with a contract signed by Cole and Cole brought the contract to the ring. Ciampa came right at Cole and Cole attacked Ciampa. However it was Ciampa left standing when he put Cole thru the table he setup inside the ring. Ciampa’s head was bleeding and he put a handprint of blood on the contract and blood started to trickle down onto the NXT Championship that Ciampa grabbed. Definitely a cool moment and we’re finally get this one on one match after months of buildup at NXT Takeover Portland.

HOLD: Tegan Nox and Dakota Kai Finally Collide

The former duo of Team Kick finally had their match after Dakota betrayed Tegan at NXT War Games. Tegan Nox was out of action for quite some time and finally made her way back to NXT after the brutal attack by Dakota. Dakota then cost Tegan a title shot by ambushing her during the battle royal. Felt it was a missed opportunity not to have these two confront each other this past Sunday at the Royal Rumble, but now we’ve reached their boiling point. The placement of this match, let alone the time given wasn’t ideal in my opinion for how big of a rivalry this has been. The match was all over ringside and at one point I thought this was going to end with a double count out. Dakota had some bad intentions with a steel chair, but Candice LeRae stopped Dakota from using the chair. The referee then was distracted by Candice and this allowed Tegan to use the knee brace to take down Dakota. A Shiniest Wizard later and Tegan Nox got the win over her former friend.

MISS: Chelsea Green’s Acquisition by Robert Stone Not Looking Good

Chelsea Green is finally in the ring in NXT since joining forces with Robert Stone. What was figured to be an enhancement match against Kayden Carter was anything but. Chelsea was too busy showboating and this led to her downfall as Kayden stole the match with a rollup pin. With all the vignettes hyping up Chelsea Green, this is definitely not the route to go in building up a new wrestler.

HIT: Dusty Classic Finals

Pete Dunne and Matt Riddle take on Grizzled Young Veterans James Drake and Zack Gibson to determine who is going to NXT Takeover Portland to face the Undisputed Era for the NXT Tag Team Championship. Gibson and Drake kept Dunne isolated most of the match. Things were not looking good for the throw together tag team here in the final round. However in the end Matt Riddle and Pete Dunne used their combinations of moves to take down the Grizzled Young Veterans to win the Dusty Classic.

This was an okay episode of NXT. They setup some things for NXT Takeover Portland in a few weeks. Unfortunately there was some filler as well. Not every episode is going to be a home run. With that being said, we got some good stories in the works so I’ll be back next time to cover the action.
