Bumping Up…Mariah May

Interviews can be a tricky topic. Not only do you have to create engaging content, but you also have to come up with questions that make for a cohesive read. And that’s all before you’re even able to find time in the interviewee’s busy schedule to ask the questions.

If it were an interview with someone you’re already aware of, then it’s more likely you will read it, right? But what about those you don’t know. You could be missing out on getting to know your next new favourite wrestler, and you wouldn’t even know it.

In order to spread the word on talent on the indie circuit, I went back to basics.

Bumping Up is here to point you in their direction and broaden your scope on indie wrestlers and promotions from all over the world. If you like what you read, give them a follow & check out their next show. You never know where all this will take you.

So without further ado, let’s get down to brass tacks & introduce you to…

Name: Mariah May

Age: 21

Hometown: London, England

How many years have you been a professional wrestler? I started training in January 2018 and made my in-ring debut a year later. It is almost my year anniversary of being a professional wrestler!

Who are your role models? (either currently or growing up) Growing up I always looked up to Mickie James. She had so much energy and fight. I can’t quite put my finger on it but something about her spirit really resonated with me as a kid. At an older age I still look up to her massively as I am able to learn so much from the way she wrestles, her movement is incredible (she is one of my dream matches!) I also admire Trish Stratus, she was constantly penned as just a model, despite her hard work, and I constantly get written off before i wrestle for being just a bit of ‘eye candy’, I like to prove people wrong and win them over with my matches, and i feel like Trish is the standard bearer for that.

Was this something you always wanted to do or did you slowly transition from ‘9-5’ to where you are now? I have always wanted to be a wrestler – it was my childhood dream! I still find it surreal that I am actually living those dreams today. I currently work a 9-5 to support myself, after work I will train in the gym and in the ring, and then when i finally get home I will prep my meals and then work on building my brand; editing content, messaging promoters, connecting with my fans and tons of important behind the scenes stuff that wrestlers do.

What are your main goals for the next few years? I would love to go full-time, as i mentioned, I juggle what feels like three lives currently with my full time 9-5, social media and wrestling (working out, meal prep and everything else that comes with it). I want to be the best wrestler I can be and that means putting as much time into it as humanly possible. I get on average 5 hours sleep a night after I get all this done – my dream would be to dedicate ALL my time into wrestling – I run around the office dreaming about it.

What’s your proudest achievement in your career so far? Being a part of the first all women’s WWE NXT UK tryout – I felt so honoured to be able to train at such an incredible facility alongside so many passionate wrestlers and be under the tutelage of the best coaches in the world. It was just 5 months after my first match, but I had been constantly training to prepare myself for an opportunity like this for years (before I was even old enough to train in ring) by working out and researching, and then once I began training I made sure to attend twice a week, and improve as far as possible where I can.

And finally where are some of the promotions fans can currently, see you in action? I release graphics advertising where I will be bi-monthly on my Instagram (@mariahmayx), in January and February I’ll be at a range of promotions across the UK, I will try to post as much content on my socials and YouTube (www.youtube.com/mariahmayx ) as I love seeing peoples reactions to my match and sharing my growth.

Huge thank you to Mariah for her time, make sure you give her a follow and check her out when you can.
