NXT Hits and Misses 1.15.20

On this episode of NXT, we find out who the final two tag teams in the Dusty Classic move onto the next round. We also find out who the number one contender for Rhea Ripley’s NXT Women’s Championship is as the ladies of NXT collide in a battle royal. Let’s break down the hits and misses.

HIT: Undisputed Era Isn’t Basking in His Glory

NXT kicked off with the new number one contender for the NXT North American Championship, Keith Lee. Lee mentioned how the Undisputed Era had a dominant 2019 and still hold all the gold in 2020. Lee planned on changing that next week by defeating Roderick Strong. Undisputed Era heard enough and ambushed Lee four on one. They went as far as wrapping a chair around his leg and Roddy came down from the turnbuckle trying to take Lee out like they did to Velveteen Dream and countless others. Tommaso Ciampa ran down to the ring and the Undisputed Era scattered, but the damage was done. Keith Lee’s chances of facing Strong next week are up in the air. However towards the end of the show, Lee came after the Undisputed Era in the parking lot and vowed that he would get Roddy next week.

HIT: Bro-serweights Advance in the Dusty Classic

The makeshift tag team of Matt Riddle and Pete Dunne had an amazing showing against the team of Flash Morgan Webster and Mark Andrews from NXT UK. Definitely the match of the night by far and worth seeing if you haven’t. As someone not familiar with NXT UK, I tip my hat to the team of Andrews and Webster. They looked damn good in this match as did Dunne and Riddle. These four tore the house down. The action was fast paced and lots of close calls. At one point Dunne punched Andrews so hard that he fell backwards onto his partner Webster who was pinning Riddle. Towards the end of the match, Webster went for a suicide dive to the outside at Riddle. Riddle however caught him with the Bro Derek. Andrews seen his partner get taken out went for all with a shooting star press at Dunne, but Dunne punched him down out of the air. This set up a Bitter End into a Bro to Sleep combo to give Dunne and Riddle the win. They move onto to face Imperium next week. I’m definitely a fan of this Riddle Dunne tag team.

HIT: Ciampa Saved by an Old Friend

Ciampa returned to the ring and had enough of the Undisputed Era taking out everybody on their hit list and Ciampa said he had a hit list of his own and Adam Cole’s name was on it. Undisputed Era came down for another four on one ambush. Just when it looked like Ciampa was going to be the next victim of UE, Johnny Gargano came out and made the save. It was later announced that NXT UK’s Moustache Mountain’s Tyler Bate and Trent Seven wanted to challenge the reformed DIY at Worlds Collide. Not sure how long this DIY reunion is going to last, but it may be best for Ciampa and Gargano to stick together for the time being with Undisputed Era lurking around. Gargano of course has his own issues with Finn Balor at the moment as well.

HOLD: Time Splitter Reunion Didn’t Quite Work Out as Planned

Alex Shelley reunited with his old partner Kushida to take on NXT UK’s Grizzled Young Veterans Zack Gibson and James Drake. Mauro brought up how Kushida and Shelley won the IWGP Junior Tag Team Championship in Japan and lost them to Undisputed Era’s Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish and conveniently that is who the winner of this match in the Dusty Classic would face next week. The thought of that got me excited, unfortunately that didn’t happen as Shelley was taken out with the Ticket to Mayhem to give the Grizzled Young Veterans the win. The Time Splitters offered to shake hands with the Grizzled Young Veterans, but they declined and told them that they were the past and boasted about themselves as the present and the future. Remains to be seen if Alex Shelley was a one off, but I’d like to see the Time Splitters stick around. Kushida seems to have been in a weird situation since arriving and the NXT tag team division definitely needs some depth.

HIT: Swerve Gets a Title Shot

NXT Cruiserweight Champion Angel Garza joined the commentary team as a triple threat match unfolded between Lio Rush, Tyler Breeze, and Isaiah “Swerve” Scott. The winner would get added to a fatal four way match at Worlds Collide for Garza’s Cruiserweight Championship. The other two spots will be filled by wrestlers from NXT UK who are unknown at this time. Just wanted to say it was nice to hear Tyler Breeze’s own theme again with the Fandango stuff mixed into it. Rush desperately wanted to win this match and get another shot at his rival Garza, but it wasn’t meant to be. Swerve got rid of Rush and hit the JML Driver on Breeze to earn his spot at Worlds Collide.

HIT: Women’s Battle Royal

Lots of surprises before we get started. Kacy Catanzaro made her return. I thought she retired? Mercedes Martinez who was recently signed also joined the battle royal. Tegan Nox also made her return as well. The graphic of course featured Candice LeRae, Io Shirai, Bianca Belair, Mia Yim, and many other women of NXT. One women who wasn’t expected to compete showed up and that was former champion Shayna Baszler. Baszler wasted no time eliminating many women in this match. Candice was eliminated fairly early in the match by Bianca which was a shocker. Mercedes Martinez had an exchange with Baszler that was pretty good, but Baszler took care of the newcomer. The final four were Baszler, Nox, Belair, and Io. Dakota Kai wasn’t in the battle royal came out and pulled Nox out and tossed her knee brace at her adding another chapter to their feud. Baszler was on the verge of choking out Io, but Shotzi Blackheart wasn’t eliminated and took out the Queen of Spades. What a moment for her, but her celebration was cut short as Belair took her out. The final two were Belair and Shirai and these two had a rift recently in a tag team match. The action was back and forth and it was anybody’s to win, but Belair’s strength was too much for Io to overcome and Belair tossed Io over the top rope. Belair is going to NXT Takeover Portland to challenge for the NXT Women’s Championship.

Overall a good episode of NXT. Lots of stories are progressing and we’re setting things up for Worlds Collide and NXT Takeover Portland. It was also announced Finn Balor would be facing Ilja Dragunov at Worlds Collide. Thanks for reading and get ready for Roderick Strong vs Keith Lee next week.
