NXT Hits and Misses 12.25.19 w/ The Chairman

Christmas time is here again, but that didn’t stop NXT from airing a Christmas Day episode of action. As advertised, Keith Lee and Lio Rush teamed up to take on the team of Damian Priest and Tony Nese and Roderick Strong had an open challenge. Let’s break down the action of this weeks NXT.

HIT: Roderick Strong Open Challenge

When I seen this announced, I had no idea who would step up to challenge Roderick Strong for the NXT North American Championship. I wasn’t expecting anything big knowing there probably wasn’t going to be alot of eyes on the product with Christmas. We did however get Austin Theory and that was quite the surprise. I’m not familiar with Theory’s work, but have heard his name mentioned quite a bit and know he has worked for Evolve. The newcomer gave it his best, but was no match for Roderick Strong as the champ locked on the Strong Hold to retain.

HIT: Swerve Meets the Gentleman

Isaiah “Swerve” Scott wrapped up 2019 against Gentleman Jack Gallagher. I haven’t seen Gallagher wrestle in forever so it was nice to see him again. The match was back and forth with each man trying to end the year on a positive note. However it was Isaiah “Swerve” Scott who got the better of Jack Gallagher in this one sealing the victory with the House Call. I think Scott could have a huge breakout in NXT in 2020.

HIT: Candice LeRae Builds Towards 2020

The women of NXT are fully aware that Rhea Ripley is the one to beat now and everyone is showcasing their abilities for the right to challenge the new champion. Candice LeRae had a good 2019 and could have a huge year in 2020. Lots of people like her and she was able to knock off Taynara with the springboard moonsault. It seems like Taynara has been getting featured quite a bit the last few weeks in NXT so she could also be another one to keep an eye on in 2020.

HOLD: Dominic Dijakovic Knocks Off Bronson Reed

The matches on this episode of NXT were fine, however nothing was simply amazing must see either up to this point. Dominic Dijakovic was in action against Bronson Reed and it seems after War Games Dijakovic has fallen back a bit compared to Keith Lee, Tommaso Ciampa, etc. Dijakovic took Reed down with the chokeslam powerbomb to end the year on a high note, but he needs to do something big in 2020 to separate himself from the pack.

HOLD: The EST KOD’s Shotzi

Similar with Dijakovic, Bianca Belair is another NXT superstar that needs to do something big to separate herself from the pack in 2020. It’s almost been a year since she went after the NXT Women’s Championship held by Shayna Baszler at the time and I feel she hasn’t been able to get back up to that level since. I like Belair and definitely believe she can be an important asset to the NXT women’s division unlike what that obnoxious stupid little man Sam Roberts thinks. Belair was in action against newcomer Shotzi Blackheart. Shotzi was another wrestler I’ve heard of and never seen compete before. She definitely has a unique look with her green hair and attire so she’ll definitely standout. However it’s also what can she do in the ring to stand out and that remains to be seen. Belair won here with the KOD to end 2019 on a high note, but what’s next?

HIT: Bask in His Christmas Spirit

Keith Lee Christmas cookies and all teamed up with Lio Rush to take on Damian Priest and Tony Nese. I enjoyed the match and really started thinking how great of a tag team Keith Lee and Lio Rush could be going forward. They both compliment each other very well and is the pairing that Lio Rush should’ve had instead of Lashley. Definitely would be a strong tag team in a division that’s lacking right now, but I also think Keith Lee is over at the point where he’s better suited as a singles champion if he gets the chance. One highlight was Lio Rush was on the outside by the commentary table and Keith Lee checks Nese right over the announcers table and looked like Tom Phillips got taken out as well. Lee showcased his strength and the crowd was behind him every step of the way. In the end it was Rush on top of the shoulders of Lee hitting the Final Hour on Nese to seal the victory.

The show was what you expected for a holiday episode. Nothing involving any major storylines, just a solid two hours of wrestling action. A fun tag team main event, a few debuts, and a few of everybody’s NXT favorites in action wrapped up 2019. Next week is the NXT awards show so not expecting anything major with storylines once again, but I’m sure things will pick up again the following week. We also learn next week the pairings for the upcoming Dusty Rhodes Classic tag team tournament so perhaps we haven’t seen the last of Keith Lee and Lio Rush yet? It’s also noted that the Undisputed Era takes on Imperium at the upcoming event Worlds Collide where NXT and NXT UK do battle. Big things happening in NXT and I will be bringing you the recaps in 2020 so thanks for reading and I wish everyone a Happy New Year!!!!
