WWE Smackdown Live Hits and Misses 11.8.19 w/ The Chairman
Smackdown hails from Manchester, England this week meaning you could see the spoilers online since this event was taped. I managed to avoid the spoilers, but part of me wishes I seen them because this show was nowhere near the amazing episode we were treated to last week. There were a few noteworthy moments that deserve reflection however and I will break the event down here.
MISS: Opening Promo Lacked Testicular Fortitude
While some fans are growing on King Corbin, I’m still not entertained. The opening promo went way too long with Corbin talking about facing Roman Reigns in the main event. The match that we were supposed to get last week, but of course we all know what happened. Corbin then used Roman Reigns dog logo and made it bark like an ankle bitter and kept talking about Reigns small testicles. Corbin was force fed the pooper scooper humor in this promo instead of going at it in so many other directions. I’m sure we all can guess who wrote this promo. We go from a hot NXT invasion angle to this. It’s going to be a long night folks.
HIT: Seven Time Tag Team Champions
New Day members Kofi Kingston and Big E challenged the Revival for the Smackdown Tag Team Championship. It’s worth pointing out before the match that Big E joked that they needed to win the titles for the seven times to keep in chase with Charlotte’s ten title reigns. However it’s still mind blowing that Kofi Kingston’s WWE Championship run is basically an afterthought as he descends back down to the midcard/tag team division. The match wasn’t anything special and it was awkward that Dash Wilder went down with a knee injury. The action continued after the break and in the end it was Kofi with Trouble in Paradise on Scott Dawson to secure the tag team championship. It’s also worth noting that New Day now replaces the Revival at Survivor Series meaning New Day represents Smackdown as they face Raw’s Viking Raiders and NXT’s Undisputed Era in a triple threat match of tag team champions for brand supremacy.
HIT: Imperium Invades Smackdown
Just when it looked like we were getting a Heavy Machinery match, Imperium from NXT UK showed up and ambushed Otis and Tucker. I enjoyed it for many reasons because I think Imperium is a solid faction and I’m not a fan of Heavy Machinery unlike the majority. Thank you Imperium!!!
HIT: Sami Zayn is Making Winners
Sami Zayn led the team of Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro to face Ali and Shorty G. Shorty G was dressed more for a pickup basketball game than a wrestling match. I joked that I enjoyed this match of two throw together tag teams than the usual tag team competition I watch. Some of it has been done too many times and others are just not good. I’m a big fan of all four of these wrestlers, except the poor gimmick Shorty G has now. Daniel Bryan watched this match on the stage as Sami Zayn continued trying to recruit Bryan to join them. Sami Zayn of course played a pivotal role in this match causing chaos around the ring which led to a Nakamura Kinshasa to Shorty G for the win. I really hope they go somewhere with this trio of Zayn, Nakamura, and Cesaro. Such talented wrestlers and they deserve a major storyline. It’d be even cooler if Bryan joined, but I’m sure that won’t happen and he’ll feud with them instead. Which is fine because of all the awesome matches were going to get.
HIT: Sasha Banks Drops a New Theme
Sasha Bank debuted a new theme with the assistance of her cousin Snoop Dogg. Banks made her Smackdown on FOX in ring debut against Nikki Cross. Bayley of course was doing commentary and was bitter at Corey Graves because she finally became the person he wanted her to be and now he wants nothing to do with her. Of course with typical WWE fashion, commercial break placement kills the momentum of the match. Banks managed to make Nikki Cross tap out with the Bank Statement and hopefully this puts an end to the rivalry between Sasha and Bayley against Nikki Cross. Sasha made her way back up towards the backstage area while Bayley got the jump on a beaten Nikki Cross. However Shayna Baszler was lurking and struck again attacking Bayley. By the time Sasha realized what was going on, Baszler was gone.
HIT: The Fiend Selects His Next Victim
Sami Zayn and Daniel Bryan were backstage with Sami still trying to recruit Daniel Bryan. However the lights went out and Sami Zayn seen The Fiend behind Bryan and took off. The Fiend took out Bryan with the Mandible Claw leaving everyone wondering what’s next. If you remember a few years ago, Bryan and Bray Wyatt once had a intense feud. At one point Bryan had to join the Wyatt Family. There were some rumors about Miz being the one to go after the Fiend first, but I’m way more excited about Daniel Bryan possibly being put in this position. Hopefully this isn’t some random attack and actually develops into something. Daniel Bryan however is going to have to reach down deep to figure out how to defeat the Fiend should they wrestle.
MISS: Braun Fury Destroy B Team
So after Tyson Fury defeated Braun Strowman at Crown Jewel, we had the two men in the ring at Smackdown and decide they want to form a tag team. B Team came out and said they would take them out. Of course this ended badly for Bo Dallas and Curtis Axel. Braun Strowman’s basically the new Big Show at this point and nobody cares what he does next.
MISS: Carmella and Dana Brooke Going to Survivor Series
Another match that was supposed to take place last week occurred this evening. Unfortunately we didn’t have Biance Belair, Tegan Nox, and Rhea Ripley to stop this from happening. The winner of this match would join Sasha Bank’s Smackdown women’s team at Survivor Series. You would think Sasha would pick heels instead of having a match, but whatever. Dana Brooke managed to score the victory in a underwhelming match spiraling down Fire and Desire’s Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose even further. Strange to see Dana Brooke and Carmella as a team getting pushed all the sudden, but that’s happening. Guess WWE feels they need more babyface teams to feud with Kabuki Warriors down the road I suppose. However I’m feeling ripped off were not getting that Carmella and Bayley feud.
MISS: King Corbin Reigns Victorious
A match that I wasn’t interested in happened. Some reason that nobody knows, Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode decided to hang around ringside during this one. Corbin touched in his promo at the start of the show about Roman Reigns losing the locker room and it was brought up again by the commentary team. Don’t know what that has to do with anything, but whatever floats WWE’s boat. Just hard for me to go from Daniel Bryan vs Adam to King Corbin vs Roman Reigns. The worst part is Corbin won this match with a pinfall victory. Sure he had help from Roode and Ziggler and maybe they’ll form some random trio stable because Vince’s stables can only be trios in this day and age. It’s just going to be weird when Reigns and Corbin are probably both on the Smackdown Survivor Series team and have to work together.
Definitely wasn’t that great of an episode of Smackdown. The first hour was alright, but things went downhill for me in the second hour. We had a title change, but it wasn’t exactly an exciting moment. Guessing being in UK prevented many NXT superstars from showing up as well to help the invasion storyline. Hopefully things get better next week on Smackdown, but that remains to be seen.
