WWE Smackdown Live Hits and Misses 6.18.19 w/ The Chairman
HIT: A Moment of Bliss
When it was announced Alexa Bliss would be hosting Bayley for her talk show segment tonight, I was scared. We all witnessed the horror show (and I’m not talking Firefly Funhouse) of It’s Your Life Bayley segment last year, but this segment tonight delivered. Both Bayley and Alexa Bliss delivered a great promo building up their Smackdown Women’s Championship match for Stomping Grounds. Alexa Bliss is one of the best on the mic and she really let Bayley have it going as far as saying she peaked in NXT. Bayley of course had enough of Alexa’s mouth and went after her. Nikki Cross of course plays the role of Alexa’s latest lackey which could prove to be the difference maker this Sunday?
MISS: No Women’s Matches
We had a great segment between Bayley and Bliss. Asuka and Kairi Sane were found and will be challenging the Iiconics in Tokyo and if the Kabuki Warriors win, they’ll earn a future title shot. Lastly, Ember Moon’s feud with Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville escalated further. The only problem is we didn’t have a single women’s match. Definitely not a message you want to send if you’re trying to make things an even playing field. There are plenty of matches that could’ve been done tonight, but creative opted to keep the women out of the ring.
HIT: The Miz Rips Shane McMahon Apart
The Miz continues his feud with Shane McMahon and his lackeys, but Miz admitted the reason Shane McMahon has taken over our televisions is his fault. Miz blames himself for creating the Best in the World persona for missing that final match allowing Shane to win the trophy. Miz recalls a time when Shane promised Smackdown Live would be the land of opportunity, but now he’s taken over both Smackdown and Raw and only awarding those opportunities to his friends. Basically Miz was speaking for the majority of us wrestling fans that are sick and tired of the overexposure of Shane McMahon. However Shane isn’t going away regardless of these promos the creative team keeps feeding the superstars.
MISS: Where’s the Intercontinental Champion?
It’s rather strange we haven’t seen or heard anything from Finn Balor since he defeated Andrade at that show a few Friday’s ago. You figure with Stomping Grounds coming up that Balor would have a match lined up. However he’s completely off the grid. Basically just about every title is on the line this Sunday, but not Balor’s? Is he hurt and nobody’s leaking the info? There are alot of Finn Balor fans out there and they definitely can’t be happy with his lack of usage the past month.
HIT: Andrade and Apollo is One Step Closer
Apollo Crews tonight was backstage harassing Zelina Vega about getting that match with Andrade. Zelina again warns Apollo that he doesn’t want a match with Andrade. Andrade though was in the building tonight and attacked Apollo. Chad Gable was awkwardly in the background taking notes. I definitely would like to see a match between Andrade and Apollo, especially on a pay per view. I think if these two got a decent amount of time to showcase their skills it would be fantastic.
MISS: Lack of Quality Wrestling
While we had some good promos tonight, I feel the wrestling hasn’t been good at all lately in the WWE. The matches just seem thrown together with no planning and alot of the matches are meaningless filler. What does it matter if Seth Rollins and Kofi Kingston team up again and beat Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn? How many times do we need to see Miz involved in a match with Drew McIntyre and Elias? There’s no long term planning and it’s showing. Wins and losses don’t mean anything and it’s hard to get invested in these matches when they’re tossed together last minute. It’s no secret the WWE is struggling and the competition is real out there. Something needs to change sooner than later before things sink even lower. Here’s to hoping Stomping Grounds provides some memorable moments, but I’m not feeling warm and fuzzy about it.
