JC’s Top Rope Report: Final Wrestlemania 35 Predictions

We are just under five months away from Wrestlemania. So it is time for me to take a stab at the Wrestlemania 35 card for the last time. There have been little nuggets leaking out about the schedule over the last few weeks and that played a part in my match making decisions. Had I wrote this and posted it on Monday it would honestly look a lot different in a couple of matches. But here we are in the home stretch on the Road to Wrestlemania!

For the preshow we will have both battle royals and a Cruiserweight Title match, similar to last year. No need to get fancy at all.

Smackdown Tag Titles: Sheamus and Cesaro (c) vs New Day vs Randy Orton and Shinsuke Nakamura vs Jeff Hardy and Rey Mysterio

This is my “get everyone on Smackdown on the show” match. There are a good amount of decent stars on that brand that they should get a match. But sorry, I can’t find a spot for Samoa Joe and Andrade “Cien” Almas.

Women’s Tag Team Championship: Sasha Banks and Bayley vs Nia Jax and Tamina

Okay you can put Nia in this match. She’s awful and maybe Sasha and Bayley can carry her to a watchable match. Nia Jax and Tamina might be the worst tag team ever, male or female. I don’t think anyone has ever reacted to Tamina coming out and that doesn’t change in the future. I sometimes wonder how she even still has a job.

Intercontinental Championship: Dean Ambrose (c) vs Finn Balor

After the Roman Reigns news broke, I really thought the main event of Wrestlemania would be Rollins vs Ambrose. I thought the Universal Title would go from Braun to Ambrose to Rollins. But that doesn’t look anywhere near the case and Ambrose is probably going to be left out of a big match yet again. Of course I don’t even know if Finn will have an actual match at this point. So I put these two together in hopes that it works.

Braun Strowman vs Drew McIntyre

Braun is getting his Universal Title shot at Royal Rumble. That leads me to believe that he isn’t going to be in the Universal Title picture come Wrestlemania. Remember last year when I was advocating Braun being in the Universal Title match? I still like him, but he’s fallen past the point of being in the Title match at Mania. Drew McIntyre, meanwhile, is on the cusps of being a main event player in the WWE. I think being in that match at Mania is still too soon. But the next best thing for McIntyre would be beating Braun clean in the middle of the ring at this show. It puts him over huge and pretty much makes McIntyre first in line for a Title shot after Mania. 2019 will be the year of Drew McIntyre.

Miz vs Shane McMahon

I can’t shake the feeling of this one. It seemed like they were starting to build towards this on Smackdown this week. Of course Miz played face in the dark match after Smackdown this past week against Daniel Bryan. So would Shane really be the heel here? I’m pretty much done with Shane McMahon as a character and I am more than done with him as a wrestler as well. I don’t need to see those awful baby punches night in and night out. This can obviously play off the World Cup as well.

Career vs Career: John Cena vs The Undertaker

John Cena said he will be at Wrestlemania. And you would have to assume Undertaker will be at Mania as well. I’m not keen on this match but I think this would be the direction they would go. I thought about putting Cena against Shane but who would that leave for Taker? You could have Cena face Daniel Bryan but again where does that leave Undertaker? There are way more options for Cena then there are Taker. This should be Taker’s last Mania. He can barely move anymore. Add the stipulation to the match and I think it at least has the crowd involved in it.

WWE Championship: Daniel Bryan (c) vs AJ Styles

This one is tough. I had Miz vs Daniel Bryan penciled in here forever. But now Daniel Bryan is a heel and also Champion. So then you look at the face side of things on Smackdown and wonder who the hell steps up here. It shouldn’t be a Jeff Hardy or Rey Mysterio. Samoa Joe has had his chances. Nakamura did last year. And you look at RAW and there’s really no one to move over. Finn Balor? I wish. And please don’t even get me started on Shane McMahon. That leads me back to AJ Styles. With the year he had with the WWE Title he deserves another Title match at Mania. You could maybe still do Miz and have Miz be the face but I think that would die a slow death in front of a Mania crowd. The WWE pulled the trigger here too early on this and I have no idea what Vince does to right it.

Universal Championship: Brock Lesnar (c) vs Seth Rollins

In this week’s Observer, Dave Meltzer said that the plan was for Lesnar to fight Rollins at Wrestlemania. He never said it would be for the Title. But it would be pretty dumb for it not to be for the Title. Rollins is the #1 guy on RAW and he is ready to take the mantle with Roman Reigns not around. Rollins is a simple enough worker that Lesnar will not have to worry about an injury if he still preparing for a UFC return. You could have Rollins win the Rumble, but I wouldn’t go that route. Elimination Chamber is between the Rumble and Mania and you know that Brock will probably not be there. So you have the RAW side fight for the Mania spot. Plus Smackdown needs a rebound after Survivor Series. If I had written this earlier in the week, I would have put AJ Styles in this spot.

Smackdown Women’s Championship: Charlotte Flair (c) vs Asuka

There is no question that the three hottest female acts in the company right now are Becky Lynch, Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair. A year ago the talk was Charlotte/Ronda at Mania. Hell, that was even the talk two months ago still. But them Becky Lynch came along and made herself the most over person in the company. And as much as it sucks, her injury might have been the best thing to happen to her. Charlotte fought Ronda at Survivor Series and I still think they fight at the Rumble. The Rumble is in a baseball stadium and you need a couple big singles matches. And despite not being booked as such, Asuka is still over. She actually got louder cheers than Charlotte when Becky picked her replacement. You can go back to the match from last year for the story. It sucks Charlotte loses her Mania spot but she still gets a chance to shine in another quality match.

RAW Women’s Championship: Ronda Rousey (c) vs Becky Lynch

Last week in the Observer Dave Meltzer said this was the plan now and I’m still going with it. Lynch is the most over act in the WWE. And if you go to Charlotte/Ronda at Mania they get booed and showered with Becky chants. Becky can handle the spotlight and her fan base continues to grow. And Becky and Ronda can promo well off each other. Vince always talks about grabbing the brass ring and Becky has clearly done that. So how do we get there? If Becky still isn’t cleared in the next week or two I have her vacate the Title. It actually helps her character. Becky enters the Rumble and wins it by eliminating Nia Jax. Becky then chooses to fight Ronda. I’ve seen some people suggest Becky vs Nia and good lord, please no. Don’t reward an incompetent worker with a big match like that. Let Becky get the spotlight she deserves.

Until Next Time,
