WWE Smackdown Live Review for 12.5.17 w/ The Chairman

Clash of Champions is coming up fast and the card is filling up. Keep reading to find out who all the champions of Smackdown Live will be putting their titles on the line against. Also find out what is next in the saga of Shane McMahon vs Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn.

The show starts with Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn heading to the ring. They go on about their war against Shane McMahon and how he’s using Randy Orton to end their careers. Sami Zayn then goes into detail around the ring and ringside areas to point out that he wasn’t ringside last week when he attacked Randy Orton in the no disqualification match against Owens. All the sudden Orton hits the RKO to Owens in the ring as Sami Zayn is in the aisle shocked. As he heads to the stage, Shane McMahon’s theme hits and he shows up with some major announcements. The first one is that at Clash of Champions Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn would face Randy Orton and a partner of his choice. Secondly, Orton and Zayn would wrestle tonight with Owens handcuffed to the ring.

Backstage Zayn catches Owens up with what all happened after he was taken out by Orton. An enraged Owens decided he would address Daniel Bryan about being handcuffed to the ring later in the show.

New Day (Kofi Kingston & Big E w/ Xavier Woods) vs Aiden English & Rusev

Smackdown starts off with the tag division. It was announced over the weekend that The Usos would defend their tag titles against New Day and the team of Shelton Benjamin and Chad Gable in a triple threat match at Clash of Champions. New Day takes advantage early on Aiden English, but before things got out of hand, Rusev pulled Aiden outside to safety as Smackdown went to a break.

After the break, English had Kingston in a headlock, but Kofi managed to hit a jawbreaker. He tries to tag out, but English carries him to his corner and tags in Rusev. Rusev applies a bear hug, but over time Kofi manages to escape. Eventually Kofi gets Big E tagged in and Rusev tags in English. Big E dominates with a series of belly to belly suplexes followed by the big splash. Big E looks for the Big Ending, but English rakes the eyes and tags in Rusev. Rusev charges, but Big E drops him with a uranage. Big E covers, but kickout. Kofi gets tagged in, but Rusev pulls Big E outside and throws him into the steps. Kofi dives to the outside taking down Rusev and throws him back inside. Aiden English runs towards Kofi and gets dealt with, but the distraction was enough for Rusev to knock Kofi off the top rope as he was going to jump back in and a swift Machka Kick knocks Kofi down for the three count.

WINNERS: Rusev and Aiden English via pinfall

It is revealed later on the show that Rusev and Aiden English were added to the Smackdown Live Tag Team Championship match at Clash of Champions.

Renee Young is backstage asking Mojo Rawley for an explanation on why he attacked his partner Zack Ryder. Mojo pretty much said that if anyone had a problem with it they could shove it.

Backstage Carmella, Tamina, and Lana are with Daniel Bryan convincing him why they should challenge Charlotte instead of Natalya at Clash of Champions. Bryan told Carmella that he would add her if she surrendered her Money in the Bank contract. Riott Squad then show up and Ruby said that since she pinned Charlotte last week she should receive a title shot. She then asks Bryan if it was because she had tattoos and didn’t dress like she was in the Bella Army. Eventually Bryan had enough of the arguing and said the Smackdown Live Women’s Championship match at Clash will be a lumberjack match.

Baron Corbin and Bobby Roode are displeased with Dolph Ziggler being added as a third contender in the United States Championship match at Clash of Champions. Ziggler shows up and goes on about his accolades, including cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase successfully unlike Corbin.

Bludgeon Brothers (Harper & Rowan) vs Local Talents

This was a quick squash once again.

WINNERS: Bludgeon Brothers via pinfall

Baron Corbin vs Bobby Roode

Dolph Ziggler joined the commentary team for this one. The match was fairly even throughout. Match wasn’t very long though as when both men were down on the mat, Ziggler decided to steal the show and give a Zig Zag to Roode first followed by Corbin.

WINNER: Bobby Roode by disqualification

Natalya is backstage excited that Carmella, Lana, and Tamina are going to be lumberjacks in her upcoming title match at Clash. Natalya tries to convince them to leave her be, but attack Charlotte if she happens to end up on the outside. Natalya also requested protection from the Riott Squad just before they showed up. Natalya then of course welcomes them to Smackdown Live and thanks them for taking out Becky Lynch and Naomi.

Charlotte Flair vs Tamina

The match starts with Tamina using her power to take advantage before the break. Match returns and Charlotte makes her comeback and gets the win with the Figure Eight.

WINNER: Charlotte Flair via submission

Natalya congratulates Charlotte on her victory, but she intends on taking her title back at Clash of Champions. Riott Squad comes to ringside and stare down the other lumberjacks of the upcoming title match. Tamina and Sarah Logan have a brief altercation before being held back by the other women.

Owens and Zayn ask Bryan for a verdict regarding the handcuffs and Bryan agrees with Shane McMahon. Owens will be handcuffed at ringside. After the break, they’re at ringside and Bryan threatens Owens that if he doesn’t get handcuffed then he’ll be suspended.

Randy Orton vs Sami Zayn

The match starts with Orton dominating by throwing Zayn to the outside and over the announcers table. Orton goes as far as to dropping Zayn back first on the table. With Zayn taking a beating, Owens starts yelling at Orton. Just as Orton confronts Owens, Zayn hits him with a baseball slide just before the break.

After the break, Zayn is trying to use bolt cutters to free Owens. Orton regains control of the match and gets Zayn in the corner. Orton delivers a superplex. While this is going on, Owens manages to get the bolt cutters and releases himself. Orton notices this and clotheslines Owens off the apron. Orton then hits his signature elevated DDT off the ropes on Zayn. Action goes on briefly and Orton is looking for the RKO, but Zayn blocks it. With Orton in the corner, Zayn goes for the Helluva Kick, but Orton moves. Orton manages to score the rollup pin for the win.

WINNER: Randy Orton via pinfall

After the match Owens and Zayn double team Orton, but Shinsuke Nakamura’s music hits and he makes the save. Owens gets a Kinshasha and Orton hits the RKO on Zayn. The two men shake hands and then they hit their finishers again.

Backstage Shane McMahon is with Daniel Bryan. Bryan asks if he’s finally done punishing Owens and Zayn? McMahon says he isn’t even close. He announced that he’s going to be the special guest referee during the tag team match at Clash of Champions and if Owens and Zayn lose they’re fired from not just Smackdown Live, but all of WWE.

RATING: 5 out of 10. In my opinion it was a very average episode of Smackdown Live. It did a great job progressing storylines for Clash of Champions, but the matches weren’t memorable. The Owens/Zayn vs McMahon feud continues to take center stage and WWE Champion AJ Styles wasn’t even on the show tonight? The tag division got more interesting with Aiden English and Rusev becoming serious players now with their big win over New Day. The women division on Smackdown Live has picked up some steam the past few weeks with the Riott Squad. Only a matter of time before Naomi and Becky return. All I know is Charlotte has alot of challengers eyeing her title. As for the United States title scene, Ziggler is trying to make himself relevant again by getting involved in the startup feud between Corbin and Roode. With that being said, next week is the go home show before Clash of Champions. Should be interesting to see what happens next. With that, thanks for reading and as always follow me on Twitter @Chairmanpodcast
