JC’s Top Rope Report: 5 Thoughts On Smackdown
-With my colleague Matt starting to write about RAW again, I’m going to do my best to bring you some Smackdown thoughts every week. I may also switch up my RAW writing into a different format in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!
1.In the first twenty minutes of watching Smackdown, I already like this announce team more than the RAW team. Jerry Lawler working as a heel is good, and he actually makes Byron Saxton okay in the process with their give and take. On RAW, Saxton is pretty much an afterthought. And Mauro Ranallo is so much better than Michael Cole it isn’t even funny. The whole team focuses on the action in front of them rather than making jokes and barely talking about the product.
2. The piped in cheers and boos are a bit much, but it is almost necessary watching the crowd during the show. I can’t recall anybody standing up and cheering in the crowd at any point. It is the WWE’s own fault, because they made Smackdown seem meaningless since the end of the brand split.
3. Kalisto wins the United States Title on RAW, only to lose it back to Alberto del Rio on Smackdown. That seems odd. If it was me, I wouldn’t have done the Title switch on RAW. I would have saved it for Smackdown and done a rematch at the Royal Rumble. The quick Title switch doesn’t really do anything for me. Sure Kalisto looked great on RAW and even in the loss here, but the quick Title change just seems weird.
4. The Social Outcasts are great. First off, it gives four guys something to do rather than sitting backstage doing nothing. And you can tell these guys are having fun out there. They will never be main eventers, but giving them a few wins and making them seem respectable is a HUGE plus for these guys, or anybody on the roster for that matter.
5. This Dean Ambrose/Kevin Owens feud has been great, and it has helped restore prestige to the Intercontinental Championship. And now these two are more than likely going to be the featured singles match at the Royal Rumble with their Last Man Standing Match. I have no doubt these two will steal the show and I’m glad they are going to have a proper blowoff to their feud. They probably won’t be in the Rumble because of it, but they could be what people are talking about after the show.
